Thangdy

It is a great honour for this opportunity to write my personal story to you. I am Thangdy. I was born in 1990 and I am the oldest brother of my 2 sisters and my one brother. My youngest sister is studying in grade 7 in Secondary School. She’s 13 years old. My 15 years old brother is studying in grade 8 in the same school. My 17 years old sister is studying in grade 11 at High School. And I am a 1st year student in University of Management and Economics in Battambang Province. I am studying there by choosing the subject of English Literature. I can study there because I have got a 40% discount in the first year and for the next year is the same as the other.

My father is a public servant. He works as a staff in The Department of Commerce in Battambang. My mother is a farmer. After work my father always goes to the farm to plough, rake the land for growing crops to sell in the village. My family depend on agriculture with my father’s little salary. When I was young my parents had to get up early to water the crops. When I was in Primary school, I had to walk to sell vegetables through the village before the class started in the morning. I rode my old bike selling boiled corns. I studied in Secondary school as well as in High school. Now I am graduated and I have a little time to help them.

I need help because now my both mother and father are getting older. They used to work hard when they were young and now their energy becomes weaker and weaker. They are not as strong as they were. My siblings and I are in the high level of studying. We don’t have enough time to help them as we had when we were in Primary School. We need many things for our studying. I am worried about my study and my three siblings while I am studying at University. I afraid one day my parents haven’t enough ability to support us to continue more.

In community which I live I have noticed that there are not many people who like studying. Most of them think that study to be able to read and write is enough for them. They don’t want to continue because they have to work to support their lives. Some people finish their learning after they have graduated from Secondary school. Their families need them to help because they are older; they want many things to assist their needs. I live near to a primary school and I have observed that most children usually ignore to study. Many adults are unemployed. In my village there are many people who give up their study to work in construction site or other works in the other places.

One more thing is that people get married at a young age. Many adults stopped going to school, stay at home, gather friends to drink wine, smoke cigarettes, use drugs, and speak in impolite language toward the old as well as the other.

In the future I have 2 purposes. All of these can help people as to think the important of studying and finding knowledge. The first is to become an English teacher. Now, I am on the way because I am a volunteer in FEDA where the school I used to study and I have just graduated from this school, too. And I will continue my study until master degree of this subject. The second is that I want to make a children film production in my community. This one is to allow children and the other people in my community to join in this project. I have noticed that today’s children look clever and confident enough to join this work. I don’t have ability to change all adults’ mindset, so I just only try to develop their children. Unfortunately, according to the today situation I am not able to achieve my goals without money.

All in all, I think that only education and my effort with your support that can help me to study and can make me to see my real future. I have a deep hoping that you will help me as you are able to help. I look forward to hearing from your consideration.
Thanks in advance for your compassionate charity.
Yours sincerely, Thangdy
